Stupendous Sensory Bins- 5 Benefits to Sensory Bins with Toddlers

Hello Fall Sensory Bins! I love creating new sensory bins for my toddlers! Sensory bins are such a helpful tool in the growth of young learners. Here are some of the benefits of using sensory bins with your littles.

1. Language Development

Sensory bins offer an opportunity to encourage language development through play. This is especially true when you play with your little in the sensory bin. You can encourage your little one to imitate words that you use or you can ask them questions to encourage speech. Saying things like scoop, dump, I am going to scoop and then dump the corn, provides key vocabulary and context to young learners.

2. Motor Skills

Sensory bins support motor skills, specifically fine motor skills. While playing in sensory bins, children will stir, pour, scoop, dump, dig, drive, etc. They will use their fingers to play with each of the smaller objects in the sensory bin. This supports growth and strength in their small muscles working with their brain and nervous system. Developing fine motor skills helps children to do things like eat, hold a pencil, write, manipulate objects, get dressed, and so much more!

3. Cognitive Development

Sensory bins are a great way to support cognitive development in young children. They can sort items by size, shape, or color. Additionally, they can count objects, begin learning math concepts, learn their alphabet, etc.

4. Social Skills

Sensory bins are a great way for children to learn social skills! They can play with others using the sensory bin. Not only is this fun, but it also teaches the children skills like teamwork, collaboration, turn taking, and communication.

5. Sensory Exploration

Sensory bins stimulate multiple senses at once due to the variety of objects in the bin. Bins contain objects of many different shapes, sizes, smells, textures, and sounds. Sensory play encourages learning through exploration. Children are able to explore on their own and build their creativity.
